Mumbai: BMC cautions about heavy to very heavy rainfall in next 4-5 days
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has predicted the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai over the next 4-5 days. The civic body has also directed concerned officials to visit low-lying areas where there are chances of flooding and take prompt action, as per news agency ANI.
After a delayed monsoon, Mumbai is witnessing a harrowing time owing to heavy rains. BMC has also posted several videos of waterlogging caused due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai.
According to BMC officials quoted by PTI, Mumbai city, eastern suburbs and western suburbs received 12.44 mm, 42.41 mm and 40.46 mm of rainfall respectively between 8 am to 12 pm on Wednesday. Meanwhile, IMD had issued a ‘nowcast’ warning at 9:30 am informing that moderate to light intensity of rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai and some coastal districts.
BMC officials say that the weather department has predicted moderate rainfall in the city and suburban area while heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
On Wednesday, PTI reported that a man was killed after a tree fell in suburban Malad due to heavy rains. The 38-year-old man, identified as Kaushal Doshi, sustained injuries after a tree fell at Mamlewadi junction in Malad. He was rushed to the BMC-run Shatabdi Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
BMC officials reported 26 incidents of trees falling, 15 of short circuit and five incidents of house collapse/partial house collapse in the last 24 hours.
Mumbaikars will also see a 10 per cent reduction in water supply from July 1. The BMC will be reducing water supply due to a shortage of water in the lakes around Mumbai as a result of inadequate rainfall. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has also appealed to citizens to conserve water and use it judiciously.
