  3. Initially he was not an active participant in politics, but then involved himself deeply in it following the tiff between Moderates and Extremists factions of Congress. This dispute deepened after the partition of Bengal in 1905.
  4. He also joined the Home Rule Movement in 1917 following the imprisonment of Annie Besant. Motilal also became the president of the Allahabad branch of the Home Rule League. In August 1918 he broke away from the Moderate faction as well and attended the session of the Bombay Congress, which demanded radical changes in the Montagu – Chelmsford Reforms.
