MoS IT Chandrasekhar cautions Zoom CEO Yuan on incorrect map of India

The Minister of state for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday cautioned video calling company Zoom’s founder and chief executive officer Eric Yuan to “make sure” that he used the correct map of the countries the company does business in or wants to do business in.

“you may want to make sure u use correct maps of the countries u do/want to do business in @ericsyuan,” Chandrasekhar said in a tweet, quoting a tweet sent out by Yuan.

A tweet shared by Yuan showing the top video calling platforms in each country portrayed a map of India in which the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir was not shown.

The tweet drew a sharp reaction from Chandrasekhar, who, in his tweet tagging Yuan, asked him to “make sure” that he used the correct map of India.

This is, however, not the first time that companies have landed in trouble for using an incorrect map of India, which often does not correctly depict the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the Ladakh region.

In 2021, micro-blogging platform Twitter landed itself in trouble after its careers page showed a distorted map of India. The map of the world on the company’s careers page depicted Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh as outside the borders of India.

The map had created legal trouble for the company and had also forced senior officials to submit a written apology to a Joint Parliamentary Committee which was then overseeing the draft of the personal data protection bill.
