Moravy Mexico Spring 2023 Collection

Moravy’s ethos is driven by its love for craftsmanship and tradition. Ivette Morán, the creative director and founder of the brand, wanted to start a dialogue with artisans to showcase their heritage. She says her dream, since she was 15, was to build a brand known for its classic pieces. “What is more timeless than a piece made out of traditional textiles woven by local artisans?,” Morán exclaimed in a backstage interview. She brings her ideas and then lets each artisan work out their magic and craft. Although she founded her brand back in 2018, this collection was the first she created following this ethos, and it meant an array of prairie dresses with mutton sleeves and frilly tops. What’s interesting about Morán’s vision is how she manages to drape these textiles in an attempt to flee from the very geometrical silhouettes Mexican traditional clothing is known for; like a skirt with a slit created by draping the textile on the front into exquisite ruffles.

While the color palette was mainly reds and purples, the use of Mexican traditional embroideries meant a plethora of colors complemented it through motifs and details. “Textiles are part of our history and traditions,” Morán said. “Each embroidered pattern has a meaning; the animals represent a specific region.” In almost every look, one could spot an eagle, a nod to the town of Zacatepec in the state of Oaxaca where it is venerated as a Nagual — their protector.

At Moravy, jackets are a signature piece, and although there were only two clean-cut versions on the runway, the idea of tailoring was still present on a structured vest and a bustier top, both paired with gauzy tulle skirts. The closing look, a plunging neckline dress with ruffled short sleeves, perfectly captured the romantic fantasy Morán had when she was a teenager; both enchanting and enduring.
