Monika advances to women’s 48-kilogram semifinals in Thailand Open International Boxing competition

In Boxing, Indian boxer Monika stunned two-time world champion Josie Gabuco of the Philippines to advance to the women’s 48-kilogram semifinals in the Thailand Open International Boxing competition in Phuket today. Monika defeated Gubuco, an experienced campaigner who won gold and bronze medals at the World Championships in 2012 and 2008. She will now compete in the semifinal against Tran Thi Diem Kieu of Vietnam, who had a bye in the previous round.
The other two Indian pugilists, Ashish Kumar and Manisha, also advanced to the semifinals with contrasting victories over their Thai opponents. Ashish dominated Aphisit Khankhokkhruea during his comfortable win by unanimous decision in men’s 81kg quarterfinal, while Manisha, registered a hard-fought 3-2 win over the two-time youth Asian champion Porntip Buapa.
Meanwhile, Renu (54 kg) and Monika (63 kg) ended their campaigns following defeats in the quarterfinals. Tomorrow, Sumit and Gaurav Chauhan will play their quarterfinals against their respective opponents from Kazakhstan. Sumit (75 kg), who received bye in the last opening round, will take on Timur Nurseitov while Gaurav (91 kg) will fight against 2018 Youth Olympics champion Aibek Oralbay.
