Mirra Andreeva SLAMS umpire for controversial Wimbledon call before crashing out, after 16-year-old threw her racket to give up match point

Teenage Wimbledon star Mirra Andreeva was left seething after a controversial umpire call gave Madison Keys match point in her defeat against the American.

The 16-year-old Russian’s astonishing run in SW19 came to an end on Monday as she was beaten 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 win on Court Two by Keys, who has booked her place in the quarter-finals.

However, there were boos at 5-2 when Andreeva was handed a point penalty for throwing her racket, giving Keys a match point. The youngster, left furious with the decision, was adamant that she had slipped and did not throw the racquet purposely.

She had already been warned about her on-court conduct after throwing her racket down in rage when Keys claimed the second set on a tiebreak to draw level, after Andreeva had won the first set 6-3.

As a result, when the racket went flying again after she appeared to lose her footing, Andreeva conceded match point to Keys, who took it to progress to the last eight.

After being penalised at such a crucial moment in the match, the current world No 102 approached the umpire to make her frustration known.

‘You don’t understand what you’re doing,’ she could be heard saying.

Replays showed that Andreeva had, as she claimed, slipped before losing control of her racket, with former US tennis star Andy Roddick one of many who felt it was harsh umpire call.

She was visibly furious with the call and left the court promptly after defeat, electing not to shake the umpire’s hand.

Andreeva also burst into tears at her bench when trailing 4-1 in the deciding set and was unable to maintain her emotions when Keys sealed match point.

It means her sensational Wimbledon run is over after wins over Chloé Paquet, Tamara Korpatsch, Wang Xiyu, Barbora Krejčíková, and Anastasia Potapova.

Speaking to the BBC after her victory, Keys said: ‘I knew [Andreeva] is obviously a phenomenal player so I knew I had to stay in the match and try to get an opportunity to break back.

‘I just tried to keep the momentum and keep going and here we are.’

She added: ‘I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t [feeling pressure]. You don’t want to be the person who loses to her for her to get to her first quarters.

‘I knew that if I could just try to stay in the match that my many, many, many more years on the Tour should kick in.’
