Footage of decorated English batter Alastair Cook reacting to the end of the first Ashes Test has proven that while he might be retired, losing to Australia still cuts deep.
The video emerged as British newspapers spoke for the nation’s cricket fans with some eye-catching headlines, including one that branded the result ‘a real kick in the Bazballs’.
Ex-captain Cook, 38, was in commentary for the BBC at Edgbaston, and footage has emerged on Twitter of Australia’s former tormenter looking crushed when Pat Cummins engineered a win for the ages late on day five.
A camera honed in on Cook’s face in booth seconds after Harry Brook fumbled a ball into the boundary to give the tourists the win – and his look of crushing disappointment told the story.

Cook can be heard saying ‘oh no’ and then shaking his head as the reality of Australia’s courageous win hit home.
In emotional scenes, Cook then watches on with envy as Cummins and Nathan Lyon embraced to toast a remarkable win.
To rub further salt in the wound, co-commentator Jim Maxwell then expertly details how Australia snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to take a 1-0 lead in the Ashes.
British newspapers didn’t hold back when they detailed how England came up short when it mattered most against their arch rivals.
Star Sport labelled the result a ‘kick in the Bazballs’, a reference to coach Brendon ‘Baz’ McCullum and his attacking brand of cricket, which has thrown new life into the English team and yielded some great results.

The Mirror said it was a ‘Test for the Ages’ , but questioned whether ‘Bazball’ is sustainable for the hosts across the Ashes series
The Guardian labelled the two-wicket defeat ‘Ashes agony’, while The Metro felt ‘victory slipped away’ under the leadership of skipper Ben Stokes.
Man of the moment Cummins admitted the result could have gone either way.
‘It was nail-biting stuff,’ he said post-match.
‘When we got to maybe 16 to win and we needed two an over, I was pretty confident but it felt like almost from the first session of day one, it was 50-50 all the way along.’
The hosts were left to rue several missed chances after Joe Root put down a tough chance off his own bowling with Cummins on six and Stokes spilled an equally hard outfield catch, despite a spectacular effort, when Lyon was on one.
Stokes’ bold declaration on day one also proved pivotal.
The second Ashes Test at Lord’s begins on June 28.
