Mohamed Salah admits he is ‘DEVASTATED’ Liverpool will not be involved in the Champions League

‘We let you and ourselves down’: Mohamed Salah admits he is ‘totally DEVASTATED’ Liverpool will not be involved in the Champions League next season after Man United secured top-four with 4-1 win over Chelsea

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has admitted he is ‘totally devastated’ the club will not be involved in the Champions League next season.

Manchester United thrashed Chelsea 4-1 at Old Trafford to move up to third in the Premier League and in the process take the last available place in the top-four.

Salah has insisted Liverpool players have let fans and ‘ourselves down’ having failed to achieve ‘the bare minimum’.

The Egyptian wrote on social media: ‘I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.

‘We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.’

Liverpool will be involved in the Europa League for the first time since 2015-16 the season

Erik Ten hag’s side went into Thursday’s match well aware that only a point would secure their return to Europe’s elite competition.

But Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all scored against Chelsea to take all three points in style.

Meanwhile, Newcastle secured their own return to the Champions League after over 20 years with a stalemate 0-0 draw with Leicester on Monday night.

It means Liverpool will play in the Europa League for the first time since they lost in the final to Sevilla in the 2015-16 season.

The Reds have endured a difficult season but recently went on a seven-match winning streak, which coincided with United’s inconsistent form.

But the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last weekend all but ended their slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
