Modi slams Channi’s ‘Bhaiye’ remark at Punjab election rally
Addressing an election rally at Abohar in Fazilka district, Modi said, “The statement that the Congress chief minister has given, during which the Delhi family (referring to Priyanka Gandhi) was standing next to him and clapping, has been seen by the whole country. Who are they insulting with these remarks? There would not be a single village here (in Punjab) where our sisters and brothers from UP and Bihar don’t do hard labour.”
On Tuesday, Priyanka Gandhi had said at a roadshow in Roopnagar district that Punjab is for People of Punjab, not outsiders. She was alluding to the Aam Aadmi Party which is in power in UP and is giving a tough fight to the Congress in Punjab. Channi took the mike from her and said do not let “UP, Bihar, Delhi de bhaiye” enter the state.
In his speech, Modi sought to know who the Congress wants to keep out of Punjab. Noting that Guru Ravidas Jayanti was observed on Wednesday, he said, “I want to ask these leaders where was Sant Ravidas born. Was he born in Punjab? He was born in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and you will not let ‘bhaiya’ of Uttar Pradesh to enter here, will you throw out Ravidasiyas (followers of Guru Ravidas), will you erase Sant Ravidas’ name too. What kind of language are you speaking?”
Modi further asked where Guru Gobind Singh was born. “He was born in Patna Sahib in Bihar, and you say you will not let people of Bihar enter. Will you then insult Guru Gobind Singh ji?… Will you insult the land where Guru Gobind Singh was born, will you use such language that you will not let people of that state enter here,” he said.
