Modi govt busy arresting opposition leaders: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was busy arresting opposition leaders and said the BJP would not come to power in 2024.

Banerjee’s claims came even as the Modi government is celebrating its eighth anniversary. Addressing a meeting in Bengal’s Purulia district, Banerjee said: “Modi babu is busy arresting the opposition leaders. You have arrested Delhi’s minister, Maharashtra’s minister. You are sending central agencies to Hemant Soren’s residence. You are calling someone a ‘coal thief’. Why isn’t the CBI or ED going to BJP ministers’ residences?”

Banerjee said the Centre must pay its dues to states. Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress spokesperson Chandrima Bhattacharya told ET last week that the BJP government was playing politics with central funds and withholding ‘97,000 cr due to her state.

“I will urge the BJP-led Central government to give us the money … If you can’t pay the money to the states, you have no right to govern this country,” CM Banerjee said. “We will protest against this on the 5th and 6th of June.” She also claimed that the BJP will not come to power in 2024.

Banerjee called the BJP-led central government as “adulterated” and accused it of mismanaging the country’s economy through demonetisation.
