Mini Mathur reveals why she never added ‘Khan’ to her name after marrying Kabir Khan 25 years ago – Times of India
During a recent conversation, the actress revealed the reason behind not changing her name and the troubles she faces because of the same.
While on a podcast with Cyrus Broacha , Mini revealed that ‘Mini Mathur’ is her identity and she would never change her name under any condition. While she admitted facing issues when it comes to paperwork involving her name, but she fights it out whenever such a situation arises. Besides being an ideological issue, not changing her name was also a logical reason as she would have to get her name changed on all official documents from passport to bank which would be too much of a hassle and neither she nor Kabir were ready for it. She also revealed that it was Kabir’s idea to not change her name and not that she ever intended to change it and that it was never a discussion between the two.
Mini also stated that women should keep their original names but forwarns that it might run them into some trouble like at the passport office where officials would want either your father’s name or husband’s name without which you are nobody to them. She also questioned the need to mention one’s religion or her husband’s name in school forms.
In a recent chat with Humans of Bombay, Kabir Khan had also spoken at length about the lack of opposition they faced from Mini’s family when they decided to get married. He said, “Mini comes from a very traditional Mathur family. Religion was never really an issue and initially, Mini thought that there will be an issue in trying to convince her extended family but it’s just so beautiful how they all accepted me. We had a wedding, did rituals from both sides, more for the families than for us. I am actually an atheist so I don’t really truly believe in God and religion so it was very easy for me to sort of accept all that… We’ve had many fights, we’ve had lots of issues but religion has never been one.”
