Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State agree to perpetual five-year contract

The eighth-ranked team in the most recent AP college football poll looks like they’ll be hanging onto their head coach for a while.

According to multiple reports, Oklahoma State and head coach Mike Gundy have agreed to a perpetual five-year contract. Per The Athletic, further terms of the deal will be released at a later date.

“This reinforces Oklahoma State’s commitment to competing for championships in football and to winning the right way. … Coach Gundy has great coaches on his staff, talented people in the program and remarkable young men on the team,” athletic director Chad Weiberg said in a statement. “While we have experienced great success the past 17 seasons, I look forward to the future and believe the best is yet to come for Cowboy Football under coach Gundy’s leadership.”

The now-54-year-old was the Cowboys signal-caller from 1986 through 1989, compiling 7,997 passing yards and 54 touchdowns against 37 interceptions across 42 career regular season games. Gundy is in his 18th season as the lead man at his alma mater, and during his tenure, the program has gone 143-67 – good for a .681 winning percentage – and 10-5 in bowl games.

Over his nearly two decades at the helm, Gundy has coached eight consensus All-Americans, including two-time Pro Bowler Russell Okung, as well as Dez Bryant, who earned three Pro Bowl nods and was named first-team All-Pro in 2014.

Following an 11-2 season in 2010, Gundy was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. In 2011, when Oklahoma State finished 12-1, Gundy garnered the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award, as well as the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.
