The tech giant has started rolling out the Android 12L update for both Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2. The new update is expected to arrive for all users in the coming weeks.
Android 12L update for Surface Duo device: New changes and features
Android 10 and 11 on Surface Duo devices offered an experience that was very close to the stock. Microsoft has noted that this new update will build stronger connections between the Windows 11 PC and the Surface Duo device. Android 12L will “align visual language for core system components across Windows and Android,” Microsoft claims.
Apart from this, Android 12L will also feature new colours, icons and UI controls that are also similar to Windows. The new OS adopts Dynamic Colour with “four additional wallpapers that align with new Windows desktop backgrounds” and also has redesigned System Settings and Quick Settings menus. Microsoft explains that offering customised accent colour options will add Windows’ “vibrancy” to Android.
The Surface Duo devices will also get Android 12’s camera and microphone toggles and status indicators while users will be able to view the recent permissions that they have allowed access to in the Privacy dashboard. Microsoft has also claimed “more spacious design for UI elements, contrast optimisations and new visibility features — from magnification to brightness and colour management.”
With Android 12L, the Surface Slim Pen 2 will also get new features where users can tap the top button to get an Inking menu. This menu will show up to four writing/drawing apps and shortcuts, along with the battery percentage. The new update also focuses on widgets with a new Photos widget from OneDrive and another one that makes it easier for users to switch from an iPhone.
