Microsoft begins rolling out tabs in Notepad for Windows 11: These users are getting the feature first – Times of India

Microsoft has announced that it is starting to roll out tabs feature in Notepad for Windows 11. The feature will help users create, manage, and organise multiple files in a single Notepad window, the company said.
Who is getting this feature?
As per a blog post by Microsoft, the tab feature in Notepad is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. The update will be brought to Notepad via version 11.2212.33.0 for Windows 11.
What are tabs in Notepad?
Tabs in notepad are pretty much like tabs in Microsoft Edge web browser that helps users to open multiple websites in a single window. The difference is that tabs in Notepad will allow users to work on different files essentially removing the clutter of opening multiple notepad windows.

“With this update, we are introducing support for multiple tabs—a top requested feature from the community—where you will be able to create, manage, and organise multiple files in a single Notepad window!” Microsoft said.
Users will be able to access these different files by clicking on the tabs which appear at the top of the app (like tabs in File Explorer). As per a previous report, users can also continue to work with files across multiple windows by dragging a tab out into its own window.
Microsoft also says that there are new keyboard shortcut keys to support managing tabs in Notepad. Furthermore, there are some improvements to manage unsaved files, like automatically generating the file name/tab title based on content and a refreshed unsaved changes indicator.

“We are aware of a couple of issues that may impact your experience with this preview. Some users might encounter issues with certain keyboard shortcuts, and we will also continue to optimise performance to ensure Notepad continues to meet our high standards of performance, reliability, and compatibility,” the company said.
Better performance?
Last month, a Microsoft employee accidentally revealed the feature for ‘Windows 11 Notepad’ app by sharing a screenshot of Notepad’s internal version online.
At that time, Windows Latest claimed that they tested the tab feature in File Explorer and observed a new tab increases memory consumption making the feature contribute to better performance. The tabs feature in Notepad app is also expected to offer the same.
