Michigan insider drops cold water on Jim Harbaugh-NFL rumors, for now

A Michigan insider is pumping the brakes on the idea of Jim Harbaugh leaving the Wolverines for the NFL after multiple reports.

Is Jim Harbaugh heading back to the NFL?

At this point, no one truly knows and reports aren’t making matters any clearer.

Michigan insider John Bacon countered Adam Schefter and Bruce Feldman’s reporting that Harbaugh is interested in going back to the pros.

Michigan insider John Bacon isn’t buying Jim Harbaugh-NFL rumors yet

“Yes, I’ve heard rumblings about @CoachJim4UM going to the NFL, but I’ve heard those 100X before and they’ve never amounted to anything. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t this time – never say never in CFB – but I’ve heard nothing concrete to convince me any change is imminent. FWIW,” Bacon tweeted.

Bacon added more in a subsequent tweet giving credit to Schefter and Feldman’s professionalism but also hinting this could all be related to negotiations between Harbaugh and Michigan.

“My take: both @AdamSchefter and @BruceFeldmanCFB are serious journalists. Confident no one’s making anything up, but haven’t heard nearly enough at this stage to conclude any change is imminent. Keep an eye on UM’s offer, including possible NIL program. Could end rumors quickly,” Bacon wrote.

Harbaugh just finished his seventh season with the Wolverines but his job security coming out of 2020 was in question. He went 2-4 during the pandemic-shortened season.

Michigan backed him with a contract extension near the start of 2021 but it included a pay cut and a clear mandate to show progress in 2021.

He did exactly that by winning the Big Ten for the first time and taking Michigan to the playoff.

Now, the Wolverines may need to sweeten the pot to ensure Harbaugh stays around whether that relates to his personal salary, the money available to hire assistants and staffers or additional investment in the football program.
