Michael Penix Jr. tosses four touchdowns as Washington stuns No. 11 Michigan State, 39-28

Washington Huskies starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. put on a show Saturday against the 11th-ranked Michigan State Spartans. 

The junior finished 24-of-40 for 397 yards and four touchdowns, helping lead the Huskies to a 39-28 upset victory over Michigan State. 

Penix began his standout performance with an 8-yard hook-up with wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, giving Washington an early 7-0 lead. 

With the Huskies up 16-0 in the second quarter, Penix threw his second touchdown of the half, finding Wayne Taulapapa on an 18-yard score. 

After a Michigan State touchdown cut the Huskies’ lead to 14, Penix responded before the half. With just four seconds left in the opening half, Penix connected with Polk again, this time from 17-yards out, giving Washington a 29-8 advantage at the break. 

In the second half, Penix and Polk decided to pick up where they left off in the first. Michigan State opened the half with a touchdown before Penix and Polk combined for a 53-yard score to help the Huskies regain their 15-point advantage. 

Penix boasts a 69.7 completion percentage on the year, with 682 yards passing, six touchdowns, and one interception. 

Nine different Huskies caught passes on Saturday; Jalen McMillian led the way with seven catches for 94 yards in the win. Along with his three touchdowns on the day, Polk finished with six receptions and 153 yards. 

Washington’s defense also stood out in the victory, holding Michigan State to just 42 yards rushing.

The 3-0 Huskies will look to stay undefeated when they host Stanford next Saturday.
