Miami Heat center Dewayne Dedmond gave himself a short night on Tuesday by flinging a massage gun onto the court following a disagreement with head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Dedmond was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct because the handheld device arced over the Miami bench and onto the court during the second quarter of the Heat’s 112-111 win over the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder.

Miami only had nine players available for the game, so Dedmond’s ejection could have proven costly.

Miami Heat center Dewayne Dedmon (21) argues with head coach Erik Spoelstra before storming off the court during the first half of Monday’s win over the visiting Thunder

‘It’s a regular Tuesday night with the Miami Heat,’ Spoelstra told TNT before halftime, poking fun at his team’s reputation for combativeness. ‘We’re in a one-point game and we had some skirmishes on the bench.’

Afterwards, Spoelstra blamed the incident on the Heat’s culture.

‘We’re all a bunch of gnarly personalities,’ Spoelstra said. ‘That part [throwing the massager] was unfortunate. Everything before that, that’s the Miami Heat. That part was unacceptable.’

He had two points and three rebounds in just under 5 minutes of game action. All such incidents are reviewed and Dedmon could also face additional disciplinary action from the team, the NBA, or both.

Dedmon has appeared in 29 games this season for Miami, all off the bench, averaging 5.9 points and 3.7 rebounds.

The Heat were without four regular starters — Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo, Kyle Lowry and Caleb Martin — on Tuesday, along with reserves Duncan Robinson, Omer Yurtseven and Nikola Jovic, all because of injuries.

They used only seven players in the 33 minutes after Dedmon’s ejection and won 112-111, going an NBA-record 40 for 40 from the foul line.
