Valtteri Bottas took a shock pole position going into the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, with Lewis Hamilton in second as Mercedes locked out the front row.
The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finished third and fourth respectively, but with Christian Horner’s team tipped to thrive in the high-altitude conditions the result is a sizeable blow.
It could have implications for the World Championship title race too, with Dutchman Verstappen currently leading reigning champion Hamilton by 12 points with Sunday’s race the first of five in six weekends as the season draws to a close.
