Mets star closer Edwin Diaz injured during celebration at WBC

New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz left the field in a wheelchair following Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic Wednesday night.

Diaz appeared to injure his right leg while jumping up and down in celebration with his teammates after the win.

The vibe on the field changed once players realized Diaz was hurt. Trainers helped Diaz off the field to the wheelchair, but it was clear he could not put any weight on his right leg.

The scene brought Edwin’s brother Alexis Diaz to tears, understanding the possible ramifications.

According to ESPN’s Marly Rivera, an orthopedist on-site examined Diaz, but he’s yet to undergo X-rays or an MRI.

The heartbreaking incident is bound to draw unwanted attention to the WBC, which was sailing smoothly until now. Major League teams undoubtedly have concerns about star players participating in an outside tournament. The Mets had some of their own about Diaz, refusing to allow him to pitch consecutive days in the WBC.

Though, even with a cautious plan, Diaz may have suffered a severe injury, which would cause a massive headache for the Mets.

Last year’s National League reliever of the year, Diaz, inked the most lucrative deal by a relief pitcher, signing a five-year, $102M contract with the Mets in November.

Unfortunately for Diaz, his season could be over before it starts, joining the likes of Bill Gramatica, Jake Peavy, and Gus Frerotte as notorious examples of when celebrations go wrong.
