Meet Three Danes Reimagining Nordic Knitwear

Nadia Wire

“Why I wanted to do my own brand was to bring textile production back to Denmark.”

To say that Nadia Wire believes in local production is an understatement. Two years ago this Central Saint Martins grad set herself the goal of building her own brand and basing production in her home country. Discovering that there were no Danish factories that could handle her made-to-order model, Wire established her own.

Friends thought she was crazy to take on such a project, and they weren’t totally off-base, Wire concedes. “I think I was very naive in the beginning,” she said. “I was just, ‘No, I’m sure it’ll be fine. I know how digital knitting works, I just need one machine then I can develop, then I can produce.’ And then I discovered it takes a lot of work, of course.” Her perseverance paid off, though. Wire, her team, and their machine, are making it work.

The way Wire explains it, it’s a two-way conversation with the machine; the program can tell them what’s possible and what’s not. This helps the studio work toward no waste production and allows for textiles to be woven to specific shapes, so that they come off the machine with arm holes, for example.

Wire is currently playing with curved lines, including lettuce-like edging to her pieces. She likes to keep their tactile aspect in mind. “Even though we might use a polyester yarn, we always try to apply a stitch to [it] so it has a really soft feel. When it’s knitwear, you want to feel cozy, because in the end that is what knit is known for.”
