MARTIN BAKOLE is hunting a big fight and his trainer and promoter have called on Tyson Fury to take up the challenge.
The 30-year-old Congolese heavyweight who fights out of Scotland saw his reputation gain a huge boost when he gave Tony Yoka a 10-round beating 13 months ago.
Activity hasn’t been on Bakole’s side since that night in Paris but joining the Boxxer ranks in February has given him a broadcasting platform to build off.
Beating Ihor Shevadzutskyi in Poland was expected but the unexpected occurred later that night when Bakole had a volatile run-in with Dillian Whyte. The British heavyweight has been offered a rematch against Anthony Joshua on August 12, but Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn says it’s been turned down. Boxing News asked Bakole’s new promoter Ben Shalom about the possibility of Bakole v Whyte happening.
“I think Dillian knows we’d love to do that fight but it’s up to Dillian,” he said.
“We’d love to make that fight but I think we’re focused on our own stable. We’ve got a huge amount of guys. Martin Bakole will get the best possible fight.”
Top Rank boss and Tyson Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum recently named Bakole and unbeaten German Agit Kabayel as potential opponents for the next fight for ‘The Gypsy King’. Fury is in need of an opponent after seeing a number of options fall through this year already.
“As long as we get paid fairly,” Bakole’s trainer Billy Nelson told Sky Sports.
According to Nelson the WBC belt holder knows first-hand how good his fighter is. The Scottish trainer recalled a particular occasion when Fury and Bakole sparred one another.
“Jarrell Miller, Joe Parker, were all in the camp at that time, and David Adeleye, and Martin was a mile better than anybody else and Tyson knew that, he appreciated that.
“I know what Martin Bakole’s capable of. So does Tyson. Therein lies the problem.”
Shalom believes fans would be excited by the prospect of Fury fighting Bakole.
“I think fans would be excited by Martin Bakole facing Tyson Fury, boxing fans in particular,” Shalom said to Sky Sports.
“We talk about the boxing fans not getting the fights that they want and we talk about the top boys not taking tough tests, that would be a tough test for Tyson Fury and I think he would know that and I think it would sell massively because of that. It’s a good fight.”
