The incident happened in the closing stages of the second leg of the Europa League play-off clash between PSV and the Spanish side. 

Sevilla headed into the game with a 3-0 lead from the first leg and were given a scare after Luuk de Jong had opened the scoring against his former side in the 77th minute.

Despite a late Fabio Silva second that gave PSV a 2-0 win on the night, Jorge Sampaoli’s side held on to reach the last-16.

However, the end of the game was marred by ugly scenes as a fan ran onto the pitch and tried to assault Dmitrovic.

The 31-year-old was able to pin the hooligan down and kept him there until other players arrived to help with the situation.

Following the game, Sampaoli was understandably not happy at all with what had gone on.

‘What happened today seems very serious to me,’ he told reporters in his post-match press conference.

‘I don’t know the type of sanction I should have taken, because it should have been more severe.   

‘It is incredibly sad that this has happened. I find it worrying; this type of thing needs to stop. 

‘We need to work together to ensure it does. This cannot happen again in the future.’
