Mark Bosnich backs Dwight Yorke to take Aberdeen job after Macarthur exit

Mark Bosnich backs Dwight Yorke to take Aberdeen job after the Man United legend’s abrupt exit from Macarthur FC… and he believes former teammate can WIN European silverware with the club: ‘The aim is to go one better than Sir Alex Ferguson’

Mark Bosnich has championed his great mate Dwight Yorke for the managerial vacancy at Aberdeen, with the former Manchester United striker eyeing up his next move after leaving Australia.

Yorke, 51, made an abrupt exit from Macarthur FC after overseeing just 13 games with the A-League club. He won the Australia Cup during his stint with the Sydney-based side.

Reports suggest that Yorke was less than impressed with the standard of football Down Under – which he compared to ‘pub’ level – and he has since thrown his hat in the ring to take over at Aberdeen following Jim Goodwin’s exit.

And Bosnich, who told Sir Alex Ferguson that signing Yorke from Aston Villa would win United the Champions League – has thrown his support behind his former teammate.

‘Don’t get me wrong. I can almost hear the Aberdeen fans saying ‘Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! From all the way down here!’ Bosnich told the Daily Record. ‘But, over the last couple of days, I’ve spoken to Dwight about what he can achieve at Aberdeen and he knows exactly what is required.’

Aberdeen are currently languishing in seventh in the Scottish Premiership, but Bosnich believes that once Yorke has stabilised the club, he can go on to trump Ferguson’s achievements at Pittodrie.

The managerial legend won the European Cup Winners’ Cup with Aberdeen, but Bosnich says Yorke can eclipse that feat with a win in the Europa Conference League.

‘First and foremost he has to steady the ship. But then the aim is to go one better than Sir Alex,’ he said.

‘Trust me, I know Dwight. It may sound ridiculous but this is a guy who can succeed at anything once he really sets his mind to something. And right now, it’s on Aberdeen.’

Bosnich further gave an insight into Yorke’s relentless mindset.

‘When he stopped playing football Dwight told me he wanted to become a professional golfer. In no time he got his handicap down to zero. He could have turned pro if he wanted at that stage. But he decided his real love is football and his future was in management instead.

‘It came as a shock when he left and I can’t go into detail about why it ended the way it did.

‘Suffice to say, he’s got principles and integrity and he won’t bend them for anyone. But now he has set his mind on going back to Europe and even though I’ve warned him about the weather, Macarthur’s loss could be Aberdeen’s gain.’
