Mariah Carey Dishes on the Most Glamorous Looks of Her Career
Thanks to her impressive career spanning four decades (all of which has been filled with glamorous fashions, dahling), Mariah Carey has certainly earned her title of true diva—just don’t go calling her that to her face. In a new Vogue “Life in Looks” video, which explores all of her best ensembles throughout the years, Carey campily quips, “Would I consider myself a diva? Absolutely not! Why would you even ask me that question? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Jokes aside, though, Carey’s powerhouse voice and dazzling style has truly cemented her as one of music’s most legendary performers. To kick off her trip down fashion memory lane, Carey recalls accepting her first Grammy award for Best New Artist back in 1991. “I believe Pamela Dennis did this dress,” Carey says of her little black dress with crystal trim, which she paired with dangly crystal earrings. “I know that I was very wrong for the earring choice. But whatever, I’m not going to disrespect the moment!”
Carey went on to reminisce about some of her favorite music video style moments. In her directorial debut for Fantasy, she wears a pair of denim cut-offs. “I wasn’t allowed to work with sexier directors [at the time,]” Carey says. “So I was like, fine, I’ll direct it.” She also shares that Honey is her favorite video of all time. “It was the first time I did a video that I really wanted to do,” Carey says. Her favorite look from it? “I jump out a window into the pool, and we had a costume change in the pool,” she says. “It was a black Dolce & Gabbana dress, and underneath was a bikini inspired by Ursula Andress and her Bond girl fabulosity.”
Of course, Carey’s life in looks also includes some run-ins with fellow larger-than-life singers. She performed Divas Live with Aretha Franklin in 1988 in a glittery, gold gown for one. “It clung to the body—it was like being nude, but with sequins on,” Carey says. “Aretha Franklin was always a hero of mine. She only ever did one duet, and that was me!” She also presented at the VMAs that year with Whitney Houston, another standout fashion moment for her. “We opened the show with a bit—a faux competition about our looks,” says Carey. “Vera Wang made these dresses for us, to be matching. My dress, naturally, didn’t show up [until the last minute]. I had a police escort for the dress.”
