Maple Leafs to make donation to ALS charity in honour of Borje Salming

The Toronto Maple Leafs will donate all proceeds from sales of their reverse retro sweater on Wednesday to ALS Action Canada in honour of legendary defenceman Borje Salming.

The team also says that all of its reverse retro sweaters worn during Wednesday’s game against the San Jose Sharks will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to ALS Action Canada. The game can be seen on Wednesday Night Hockey on Sportsnet, starting at 7 p.m. ET.

The commemorative shoulder patch the team is wearing to honour the late Salming, who battled ALS for most of 2022 and died on Nov. 24, will also be sold to the public, with proceeds from the remainder of the season going to the same charity.

“On behalf of ALS Action Canada, the first and only ALS patient-led advocacy organization in this country, we thank the Toronto Maple Leafs for its generosity in supporting our work to help ALS families urgently access new drug therapies, get better access to clinical trials, and push for increased research funding for cure,” said Toronto Maple Leaf alumnus, ALS advocate and ALS Action Canada Board Member Mark Kirton, in a statement. “Borje Salming’s death reminds us all that it is time to raise our voices and come together as a country to end this horrific and torturous disease now.”

Fans can buy the reverse retro sweater through Real Sports Apparel’s website or by visiting the store in person at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday. Game-worn and game-ready sweaters from Wednesday’s game will be auctioned off at auctions.realsports.ca from Wednesday at noon ET until Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
