There’s no doubt that Sheldon Keefe would prefer it if his best players didn’t take penalties. But the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach still had praise for William Nylander following a retaliatory roughing penalty in the second period Saturday.

The play in question occurred midway through the second period as Nylander and Blue Jackets defenceman Nick Blankenburg chased a puck behind the Blue Jackets net. After Blankenburg checked Nylander into the boards, the speedy winger turned around and struck the defenceman up high with his arms and stick. The penalty was initially flagged by officials as a five-minute major, but upon review Nylander was instead given a two-minute minor for roughing.

“I shot the puck and a couple of seconds later he tried to hit me so I just felt pissed off,” Nylander, who opened the scoring in the game, said. “I didn’t think he needed to hit me there.”

Nylander is among the most disciplined players on the Maple Leafs with only 16 penalty minutes this season, and is in the midst of a career year offensively. He’s on pace to smash his career-best totals from last season with 29 goals and 61 points in 54 games so far this year.
