Maple Leafs activate T.J. Brodie off IR, no timeline for Matt Murray’s ankle injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs activated defenceman T.J. Brodie off injured reserve and recalled goaltender Joseph Woll from the AHL on an emergency basis with Matt Murray sidelined with an ankle injury.

Brodie has been sidelined with a rib injury and said he was ready to return to the lineup but needed to get the green light from the medical staff. The veteran defenceman has two goals and eight points in 28 games this season.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe said that there is no timeline for Murray’s ankle injury and the team expects to have an update after the NHL All-Star break.

Woll joins the Maple Leafs for Sunday’s game against the Washington Capitals as the backup for Ilya Samsonov, who was named the starter. Matt Murray was unable to make his last start Friday against the Ottawa Senators because of an ankle injury that was aggravated during warmup.

Woll has been impressive in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies this season going 12-1-0 with a 2.46 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage. The 24-year-old was sidelined for eight months after having shoulder surgery and a setback that prolonged his absence.

To make room for Brodie and Woll on the roster, the Maple Leafs placed Auston Matthews on injured reserve and loaned Bobby McMann to the Marlies.
