Manchester United player ratings for win over Arsenal as Jadon Sancho and Antony are among those who impress and Harry Maguire struggles for confidence after losing the captaincy
Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-0 in New Jersey on Saturday night as both clubs continued their pre-season campaigns.
Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho sent United on their way after errors from Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel, with the Red Devils also winning a penalty shootout after the match.
The win was United’s third victory from three in pre-season so far after Erik ten Hag’s side beat Leeds and Lyon earlier on this summer.
They will now face Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the States before the start of the season, with friendlies against Lens and Athletic club also scheduled.
Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler was in New Jersey to rate the United players.

STARTING XI
Tom Heaton 7 – Started because Andre Onana wasn’t ready to make his debut and looked solid. Highlight was an excellent double save from Gabriel Martinelli in the first half, and also picked out Mainoo’s run with a great long ball in the build-up to United’s first goal. The only one of the starting XI to re-emerge for the second half as Erik ten Hag changed 10 outfield players.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6.5 – Started off in the same vein as he played much of last season: giving very little away defensively and getting forward effectively as well.
Raphael Varane 6.5 – Nice and steady from the French veteran. He’s done enough in the game to not be trying to tear up trees in pre-season.
Lisandro Martinez 7 – He has slotted straight back in after returning from a broken metatarsal in April. Tidy and typically tenacious which included being booked for a rather wild challenge on Bukayo Saka before half-time.
Luke Shaw 6.5 – Had his hands full with Saka in the stifling heat in New Jersey but just about did enough to keep his England teammate under wraps, and produced a vital interception to stop Saka going clear at the end of the first half.
Kobbie Mainoo 7 – Another assured performance from the youngster who has really impressed in the three pre-season games so far. His lung-busting run down the right enabled him to set up Fernandes for the first goal.
Mason Mount 7 – Third start in a row after his £60million move from Chelsea and again showed that he will bring a spark to United. He’s got a bit of an edge to his game as well, as he showed when flattening his old mate Declan Rice and then jumping in to defend Martinez in a melee.

Antony was also in good form for United and played with real confidence despite missing an early effort
Antony 6.5 – Scuffed early chance wide of the post from a great position but didn’t let it affect his confidence and looked lively after that. Went close with a fine curling effort before the break.
Bruno Fernandes 7 – His first game since getting the captain’s armband on a permanent basis and celebrated with a fine goal in the 30th minute – although Aaron Ramsdale will be disappointed he didn’t keep it out.
Alejandro Garnacho 5.5 – Quiet by his standards as the young Argentina international struggled to make an impact on the right. Stretched the Arsenal defence with a run towards the end of the half, but did little else of note.
Jadon Sancho 6.5 – Played as a false nine and justified Erik ten Hag’s with an excellent finish into the roof of the net in the 37th minute. Sancho impressed on tour last season too but he really needs to kick on this time whatever position he ends up playing.
Sancho played in a false nine position and shone but needs to kick on during the season
SUBSTITUTES
Diogo Dalot 6.5 – Not as strong on defence as Wan-Bissaka but better going forward, and showed it again by creating several openings down the right.
Victor Lindelof 6.5 – Looked solid on the whole after deputising for the injured Martinez towards end of last season, and was equally dependable here.
Harry Maguire 5.5 – Having lost the captaincy to Fernandes, it was notable that Ten Hag chose to give Casemiro the armband rather than Maguire at half-time. Still looks a little short on confidence.

Brandon Williams 5.5 – Only made one appearance last term after a season out on loan at Norwich and didn’t show anything here to suggest he will challenge Shaw and Tyrell Malacia for the left-back slot.
Casemiro 6 – United’s skipper in the second half, he will be glad to get 45 minutes under his belt. Another decorated veteran who will be happy to ease through the gears in pre-season.
Christian Eriksen 5.5 – Resumed his midfield partnership with Casemiro in Ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 and probably the player most under threat by Mount’s arrival. Lacked the dynamism that his new teammate brought to United before half-time.
Christian Eriksen resumed his midfield partnership with Casemiro but is likely to lose his starting place
Marcus Rashford was saved by the flag after missing a good opportunity in his first game since his new £300,000-a-week contract
Scott McTominay 6 – His future is still a little uncertain going into the new season, but performed well here in tough conditions. Will hope to get more game time in Houston and Las Vegas against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
Amad Diallo 5 – Lasted less than 15 minutes after coming on at half-time. Didn’t have a chance to get into the game.
Facundo Pellistri 6 – Didn’t get on at the interval but was called into action when Amad went off. There were moments when he looked lively.
Marcus Rashford 6 – First game for United since signing a new £300,000-a-week contract. Was very relieved to see the linesman’s flag go up when he failed to get on the end of Dalot’s cross right in front of goal.
