Manchester United fined £65,000 by FA after their players surrounded referee Chris Kavanagh during FA Cup tie win over Fulham last month

  • Manchester United beat Fulham 3-1 in their FA Cup quarter final last month
  • The club has now been fined £65,000 for surrounding referee Chris Kavanagh
  • Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off during the game and banned for eight games

Manchester United have been fined £65,000 for surrounding the referee in last month’s FA Cup clash with Fulham.

United have admitted ‘failing to ensure players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.’

It comes after a second-half incident that saw United players protesting to referee Chris Kavanagh about a handball from Willian in the penalty area.

The penalty was eventually given, which resulted in red cards for Willian and Fulham boss Marco Silva for their outrage at the decision, which was made after a VAR check.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was also later sent off and handed an eight-match ban after shoving Kavanagh.

Both Mitrovic and Silva later apologised to Kavanagh for the incident, with the striker admitting he ‘should not have put his hands on him’.

There were no punishments for United players at the time, but the FA has now given details of the club’s fine after charging them two weeks ago.

A statement issued by the FA on Thursday read: ‘Manchester United FC has been fined £65,000 after its players surrounded a match official during the 71st minute of their tie against Fulham FC in the FA Cup on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

‘The club admitted that it failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and do not behave in a way which is improper.

‘Manchester United FC’s fine was imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a subsequent hearing.’

United trailed 1-0 at the time of the incident, but the Cottagers fell apart after having two players sent off and eventually lost 3-1 after two goals from Bruno Fernandes and one from Marcel Sabitzer.

Erik ten Hag’s side will next play in the competition against Brighton in the semi-final on April 23, with Man City set to face Sheffield United in the other final four clash a day earlier.

Despite patchy league form in recent weeks, the Red Devils could still secure an unlikely treble if they add FA Cup and Europa League medals to their League Cup success in February.
