Man City: Erling Haaland urges team-mates to deliver repeat performances of their 7-0 Leipzig rout
‘We should do this more’: Five-goal Erling Haaland urges Man City to deliver repeat performances of 7-0 rout of RB Leipzig… before revealing he told Pep Guardiola he wanted to score a double hat-trick when he subbed him off
- Haaland had wanted to try for a ‘double hat-trick’ before his substitution
- The striker became the youngest player to score 30 Champions League goals
- Norwegian also broke Manchester City 94-year-old goals-per-season record
Erling Haaland wants Manchester City to play with Tuesday evening’s intensity more often after he broke yet more records by scoring five in a rout of RB Leipzig.
The Norwegian took his tally to 39 goals for the season, overtaking the previous best, set by Tommy Johnson 94 years ago.
He also became the youngest player ever to reach 30 goals in the Champions League.
Haaland – who revealed that he wanted to stay on despite being afforded a rest by Pep Guardiola – believes City should go at teams with this gusto more regularly.
The 22-year-old was awarded the match ball and the man of the match award on Tuesday night
The Norwegian forward made history a number of times in City’s rout of RB Leipzig
‘We worked on the pressing, especially at home we have to run and press,’ the 22-year-old said. ‘We are so good at getting the ball.
‘In my opinion, we should do this more. I think we can use this [pressing] more, there is more space for the guys in between to play.’
Haaland added: ‘I told him [Guardiola] I would love to score a double hat-trick but what can I do? I’m blurry in my head.
‘I remember shooting but not thinking. I was so tired after my celebrations.’
My super strength is scoring goals. Should I be honest? A lot of goals, I didn’t think. I was just trying to get it into the back of the net. A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not.’
Manager Pep Guardiola was delighted with the ‘huge talent’ he has in star-boy Haaland
Guardiola hopes Haaland’s killer instinct can help City finally lift a trophy they have craved for years.
‘It’s five in 60 minutes, if he was to do 90 minutes, I don’t know!’ the City manager said.
‘He is an incredible guy with huge talent, power and mentality. He is a serial winner. Having a weapon like Erling in this competition is important.
‘The problem is every time he doesn’t score two or three he will be criticised. His mood is a gift to all of us, a huge competitor. He scored five, had 30-35 ball contacts, that’s what we’re looking at.’
