JOHANNESBURG – The unrelenting Mamelodi Sundowns machine has been extremely difficult to stop in the DStv Premiership this season.
While two teams, TS Galaxy and SuperSport United, have managed to beat them in the league, the Brazilians have still managed to deliver their most dominant title defence in the current campaign.
Sundowns have a staggering 17-point lead at the top of the table, with eight matches left to play and are on course to break the Premier Soccer League (PSL) record for the most points in a season (71).
They’ve racked up 56 points from 22 games so far, after a remarkable run of 15 consecutive wins. Their supremacy as a team has seen them rewarded with a selection of 10 players from the club by Hugo Broos for the latest Bafana Bafana squad to play Liberia in this month’s Afcon qualifiers.
Coach Rulani Mokwena said that while the players who were called up were a source of pride, he and the club could go further to get more of their players in the national setup.
“I’m sure this makes the football club very happy and the supporters extremely proud of the players. I share the same feelings. I am very proud of them but they [the players] know that we can do more, we demand more and we are never satisfied with our achievements because we know we are capable of doing more,” Mokwena said.
The Brazilians host Africa’s Club of the Century, Al Ahly of Egypt, in a CAF Champions League group match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.
Mokwena has often said the continental competition is the barometer by which they wish to be measured after winning six successive league titles at home.
