Maldives: Eye on China, India to boost defence ties with Maldives | India News – Times of India

India and the Maldives on Sunday decided to further boost bilateral defence ties, especially in the maritime domain, military engagements and the complexity of joint exercises, during the defence cooperation dialogue (DCD) at Malé.
The 4th DCD, which was chaired by defence secretary Giridhar Aramane and his Maldivian counterpart chief of defence force Major General Abdulla Shamaal, reviewed the entire gamut of ongoing bilateral defence cooperation activities.
With an eye firmly on China making inroads into countries in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), India has been helping Malé with the capacity-building of the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF), military aid and training, EEZ surveillance and hydrographic surveys.
“The armed forces of India and the Maldives continue to seek bilateral cooperation in multiple fields and the increased engagements are a positive sign for the future of bilateral relations,” a defence ministry official said.
The DCD is the highest institutionalised interactive mechanism between the two countries, and charters the future course of relations between their armed forces.
India has stepped up its diplomatic and military engagement with Maldives, which included aid during the Covid, especially since President Ibrahim Mohamad Solih came to power in 2018.
The Indian Navyhas been boosting cooperation with the MNDF on maritime information sharing and domain awareness. Both countries share common perspectives on maritime security issues in the IOR and have been working together closely in several bilateral, mini-lateral and multilateral fora such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium and the Colombo Security Conclave, another official said.
