Lucy Boynton’s Chanel Couture Look Combined Mod Style With The Flintstones

Chanel ambassador Lucy Boynton has something of a uniform when it comes to dressing in the House’s designs: choose a mod mini and go from there. Just last month, she wore a bubblegum pink mini dress to a luncheon hosted by Chanel at the Tribeca Film Festival. At the Métiers d’art runway in December, Boynton wore a prim striped shift over a white blouse. She continued this theme at the haute couture fall 2022 show on Tuesday. The actor selected a black and white boxy long-sleeved jacket from the cruise 2023 collection worn over black shorts and glossy flats. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Boynton appreciates each detail in these outfits. “I loved my look so much I would live in it,” she says. “I felt comfortable and confident. I love the combination of the super short boxier shape, the shorts, and the beautiful flats. Each piece is exquisitely made (for example the buttons on the jacket were kind of Art Deco; they were so beautiful) but I was just comfortable and not restricted in any way.”

It’s the subtle familiarity of Virginie Viard’s designs for Chanel that feels particularly attractive to Boynton. “The collections always have a uniform concept but each piece feels really different, whether it’s in the cut or color or weight of it, so you can still stay true to you and your self-expression,” she says. “Also, the intricacy of the pieces and the detail that goes into every centimeter is shocking. It’s walking art.”

That was particularly true of the haute couture collection. Viard dove into Chanel’s archives from the ’20s, ’30s, ’60s, and early aughts to find inspiration for 44 outfits filled with subtle details like ostrich feathers applied to black chiffon on a tweed coat, or a deco print made entirely of sequins. Watching from the front row, Boynton particularly enjoyed a silver sequin skirt suit, “the white ghostly dress,” and a black sheer dress with a geometric pattern. “I loved the movement of all of these pieces,” she says.

After Paris, the actor is embarking on the most important work of all. “I have a bit of time off before I start filming again at the end of summer so I’ll be working on switching off,” she adds. Below, see how Boynton got ready for the Chanel show, from her Pebbles Flintstone-inspired bun to her polished loafers.
