The LSU Tigers have finally reached the top of the mountain.
On Sunday, LSU captured its first national championship, downing Caitlin Clark and No. 2 Iowa, 102-85. The Tigers used a smothering offensive effort to top the Hawkeyes, scoring the most points ever in a women’s title game.
While much of the focus was on the stars headlining Sunday’s title game, it took a village for LSU to walk away as champions.
Four LSU starters finished in double-figures, including Alexis Mooris (21), Ladazhia Williams (20), Angel Reese (15) and Flaujae Johnson (10).
Morris was especially vital to LSU’s win. The senior guard was glued to Clark for most of the game, holding the Iowa star to a modest 30-point effort. Morris also stepped up late, practically taking over the game in the fourth quarter.
Leading 59-42 at halftime, the Hawkeyes made a third-quarter push to get back in the game. However, Morris helped LSU weather the storm scoring 15 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, senior Jasmine Carson was an unlikely hero for the Tigers in the first half coming off the bench.
After failing to register a point in the Tigers’ previous three games, Carson made a massive impact for LSU.
With several starters in foul trouble, she stepped up when called upon, finishing with a team-high 22 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Only three seasons removed from a nine-win season, the Tigers are now champions for the first time, capping off an incredible turnaround for the program since the arrival of head coach Kim Mulkey in 2020.
