“After the state elections were over, Mamata Banerjee went to meet Sonia Gandhi and asked her to form a grouping of opposition parties. But Congress did nothing for six-seven months. So, Trinamool leadership decided to branch out in the states. Then, Trinamool took a decision on expanding its base on June 2 last year. Since then attempts have been made to venture out in other states . Banerjee has already said the party will not contest the elections in UP in the assembly polls but will fight in Lok Sabha polls,” Roy told ET. In Haryana, there are no organisational efforts till date. However, Roy claimed that “the situation is fluid on the anti-BJP front at the moment with 2024 Lok Sabha elections two years away”. Asked about alternatives to the BJP and if Mamata Banerjee will be the front runner as PM face, the senior Trinamool leader observed that the “situation is totally fluid at the moment. Lok Sabha election is two years from now” “As it is said, a week is too long in politics. Two years is a very very long time and no one knows what shape the opposition unity will take,” said Roy.
