Harvey Elliott could not hold back the tears as he dedicated his first Premier League goal to his grandmother after revealing that she passed away earlier this week.

The 19-year-old scored Liverpool’s second goal during their 9-0 drubbing of Bournemouth on Saturday, and was visibly emotional on the pitch as he celebrated with his team-mates.

Speaking after the game, Elliott explained why the goal meant so much to him and his family.

‘My nan passed away a few days ago, so that was just for her really, and more importantly the three points,’ he said in his post-match interview.

Elliott went on to post a picture of himself in his younger years with his grandmother alongside the caption: ‘That win was for you Nan! Rip my queen.’

The attacking midfielder was replaced at the break with Liverpool already 5-0 up, but Jurgen Klopp’s men refused to ease off as they scored four more goals in the second half.

Roberto Firmino was particularly impressive as he scored twice and registered three assists.

His goals ended his long run without finding the net in a league match at Anfield, which stretched back to December 2020.

Elliott believes Firmino will take great confidence from his return to form in front of goal.

‘Bobby is a great player as well as a great guy, and it’s always a great thing to play with him. He’s unselfish in many ways, but just for his confidence today, it was unbelievable,’ Elliott added.

After coming off the bench in Liverpool’s opening day draw at Fulham, Elliott has now started the Reds’ last three matches, and is starting to establish himself as an important player at the club after his lengthy injury lay-off last term.

He looks set to feature regularly during Liverpool’s congested run of fixtures over the coming weeks, and he called for his side to continue to build momentum after picking up their first victory of the season.

‘It’s back to the busy stage now, three games in a week, so recovery is very important. We just need to keep on going,’ Elliott said.
