Lightning acquire forward Brandon Hagel from Blackhawks
The defending Stanley Cup-champion Tampa Bay Lightning added an asset for their defence by obtaining Brandon Hagel and two fourth-round picks for two first-round picks and two prospects, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.
In 55 games this season, the 23-year-old Hagel has 21 goals and 37 points in a breakout season for Chicago. He has two years remaining on his contract with a $1.5-million cap hit and will be a restricted free agent at the end of his deal.
Along with Hagel, the Lightning get fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024. The Blackhawks receive a first-round pick in 2023 and 2024, plus prospects Taylor Raddysh and Boris Katchouk, both members of Canada’s 2018 World Juniors team.
Hagel, a Saskatoon native, was originally selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft by Buffalo, but the Sabres relinquished their rights when they couldn’t sign him to a contract. Chicago signed the forward to a three-year entry-level deal and made his NHL debut on March 11, 2020.
The Lightning are the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.
