LG may supply OLED panels for Apple iPad by 2024 – Times of India

LG display is reportedly preparing to supply OLED panels for upcoming Apple iPad models. According to a report by ETNews, the company is planning to expand its plant in Paju, South Korea to support the demand for OLED panels for iPad. The report suggests that the increased production capacity will also be aimed at future iPhone models. It is worth noting that it is unlikely that the first OLED iPad will use an LG panel. This is because the company is planning to ramp up the production in 2024 and it is expected that the first OLED iPad will go under manufacturing before that.
As per previous reports, Samsung is also ready to manufacture the OLED panels that Apple wants but it seeks a huge order and machinery to do so. The joint project between Samsung and Apple was reportedly called off earlier as most OLED panels use a single slack structure where red, green and blue form one emission layer. However, Apple demanded two stack tandem structures for the iPad OLED panel as it stacks two red, green and blue emission layers which doubles the brightness and extends the life of the panel by up to four times. Notably, LG Display already makes a few panels with two stack tandem structures for a few products.
If the new report from the ETNews is to be believed then it is likely we may see an Apple iPad with LG OLED panel in late 2024. A report by MacRumors has also revealed that Chinese electronic components company, BOE, has recently converted the layout of one of its OLED panel factories to manufacture larger panels for other devices and automobiles, other than just smartphones. BOE, which also happens to be a supplier of Apple, may develop OLED displays for iPads and iMacs in this factory.
