Leicester star James Maddison undergoes scan on injury as training limited

James Maddison has a scan as he manages ‘an issue’ that has limited his training time with Leicester ahead of key games against Man United and Arsenal… after knee trouble wrecked his World Cup with England

  • Maddison is ‘managing an issue’ that is limiting his contribution in training
  • Leicester are managing Maddison’s training programme very carefully
  • A knee problem ruined his chances of playing for England at the World Cup

James Maddison has undergone a scan with Brendan Rodgers revealing Leicester’s star man has been ‘managing an issue’ that has limited his contribution in training.

The attacking midfielder has been one of the best players in the Premier League this term, claiming nine goals and five assists as the Foxes battle to preserve their top flight status.

While it is unclear why he had the scan, knee trouble effectively ended Maddison’s chances of playing for England at the World Cup and then ruled him out of Leicester’s first four league games after the tournament – all of which ended in defeat.

With matches against Manchester United and Arsenal ahead, the 26-year-old’s training programme is being handled carefully.

Even though he had the scan before captaining Leicester to victory over Tottenham last weekend, boss Brendan Rodgers admitted Maddison had not trained during the early part of last week, rejoining the squad only on Thursday.

Brendan Rodgers revealed Leicester’s star man has been ‘managing an issue’

‘He didn’t train a lot last week as he was managing an issue but he’s an absolutely outstanding player,’ Rodgers said.

Since Maddison returned to the starting XI, Leicester have recorded back-to-back wins over Villa and Tottenham and pulled six points clear of the bottom three.

The club are braced for offers for Maddison in the summer after two strong seasons, though the club still hope to negotiate a new deal with the attacking midfielder, whose contract expires in summer 2024.

Asked this month about selling their best players, Rodgers said: ‘It’s something that in the main has always been done at Leicester. You can never be frightened of that.

‘It’s all about that pipeline of players, bringing in the next one. It’s the model that’s here.’
