Leeds consider Nuno Espirito Santo and  Steven Gerrard in their search for a new manager

Leeds turn their attention to Nuno Espirito Santo and Steven Gerrard after Alfred Schreuder became the latest managerial candidate to be ruled out of the running – but Liverpool legend has his reservations

Leeds United’s search for a manager continued on Monday night after the latest candidate, former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder, was ruled out of the running.

Talks are ongoing with a number of candidates as the club assess whether an interim appointment until the end of the season is the best course of action.

Al-Ittihad’s Nuno Espirito Santo is one that continues to be pushed while Steven Gerrard’s availability, alongside former Leeds favourite Gary McAllister, has also been noted, though the former Villa boss is understood to have reservations.

Schreuder, 50, was at Leeds’ team hotel as well as Elland Road on Sunday with his agent Milos Malenovic.

He held talks with club executives and took the opportunity to meet up with old colleagues Erik ten Hag and Steve McClaren of Manchester United but, ultimately, returned to Holland on Monday no longer in the running to become Leeds’ next manager.

Since parting company with Jesse Marsch a week ago, Leeds’ search for a new manager has taken them via West Brom’s Carlos Corberan, Vallecano’s Andoni Iraola, Arne Slot of Feyenoord, ex-River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo, Mauricio Pochettino and Schreuder.

The timing of their vacancy or length of contract on offer have been points of conflict for most while Marsch himself has since held talks over a return to the Premier League with Southampton.

Leeds want to make an appointment before Saturday’s crunch Premier League game against fellow strugglers Everton but U21s coach Michael Skubala will continue to take team training in the meantime.
