Lea Michele’s Met Gala Gown—And Her New Bob—Honored Barbra Streisand

Lea Michele is on cloud nine. The actor and musician said so herself just hours before she walked the red carpet at the Met Gala for the fourth time. Attending as a guest of Michael Kors, who also designed her dress, Michele was especially excited for the festivities honoring Karl Lagerfeld—even as a veteran attendee. Still, there was another legend who Michele and Kors wanted to reference with their Met look: Barbra Streisand, of course.

Kors and Michele have bonded while she’s been playing Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, as the two have a shared love of Streisand, who played Brice in the 1968 film adaptation of the beloved musical. Naturally, Michele’s role of a lifetime (and her perma-inspiration Streisand) had to come into play when designing her Met Gala look. “I’m having the best time of my life in Funny Girl, and I’ve built this relationship with Michael,” she said. “To now be going to the Met Gala together, to be honoring Karl’s work and celebrating fashion and Michael’s incredible work and tipping our hat to Barbra at the same time, it’s our whole excitement and joy.”

For the event, Michele wore a silver floor length gown embroidered with 11,700 mirrored sequins and 10,100 crystals over a base of individually stitched paillettes. The silhouette featured a deep scoop neckline, an open back, a bow across the bust, and sparkling fringe on the wrist-length sleeves and skirt. Michele, Kors, and Michele’s stylist Brian Meller used the mirrorball effect as a reference the first time Michele is onstage as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, when she stares into multiple mirrors. (Ahead of the Met, Kors visited Michele at the August Wilson Theater on Broadway for her final fitting and to take some pre-Met photos in front of those mirrors.)
