Last-Minute Halloween Makeup Ideas From the Pros
With the spookiest day of the year now around the corner, it’s time to nail down your Halloween makeup look ASAP. And this is not the time for routine cat whiskers or vampire fangs: Go all in on the season with a few tips from the pros.
As part of this year’s #VogueBeautyHalloween Challenge, we asked three makeup artists who know their way around a palette to create beauty looks that would leave a trail of gasps in their wake. From scary legends that’ll keep you awake all night to vampy television icons, they delivered. Here, they share their inspirations, as well as the products that made each transformation possible.
Fenty Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist Priscilla Ono is well-versed in creating a show-stopping look. For this year’s challenge, she took inspiration from a scary childhood story. “Growing up with my Mexican grandparents, I always heard the tale of ‘La Llorona.’ It’s a very old, chilling Mexican folklore story. I wanted to pay homage to my Mexican roots and create a look to pair with the scary story I grew up listening to.”
To make sure the look lasts all night long, Ono primed with Fenty’s Pro Filt’r in matte then set her face paint with the Instant Retouch Setting Powder. Animated eyebrows were courtesy of the Flypencil in the shade Bachelor Pad.
Mario Dedivanovic, aka Makeup By Mario, is known for taking contour to the next level. More recently, he’s behind the hidden makeup look you’re guaranteed to see all over this Halloween. “I thought it would be fun to do a playful take on Kim’s iconic Met Gala look from this year, as I’m sure it will be one of the most popular costumes of 2021. In order to do it right though, you must do full Kim K transfer-proof glam under the mask. Not one speck of makeup transferred, by the way!,” he says. “All jokes aside, the look in person was hauntingly beautiful. I remember getting chills down my spine when they put the mask over her head. It was an iconic moment that I will never forget.”
To create the full glam that goes beneath the mask, Dedivanovic used his Soft Sculpt Shaping Stick for easy and precise contouring, then created a full lip with Ultra Suede Sculpting Pencil in Lauren and the Ultra Suede Lipstick in Amanda.
When in doubt, go for the iconic, like Jenna Kristina did this year. “Elvira has always been the queen of Halloween. She’s sexy, cool and mega badass. I loved her big hair, her beauty mark and the subtle pink and blue on her eyelids up past her forehead.”
To create a flawless base, Kristina used Chanel’s Ultra Le Teint, a rich, full-coverage foundation that instantly evens out skin tone. For the spiky liner, she went with Maybelline’s Hyper Easy Waterproof Liquid Line, followed by Dior’s Rouge lipstick for Elvira’s iconic, bright-red pout.
