Lalit Pandit on Alka Yagnik’s strong musical bond with Jatin-Lalit – Times of India

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Bahon Ke Darmiyan, Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai… Alka Yagnik and Jatin-Lalit have given major chartbusters over the years.
Lalit Pandit, one half of the Jatin-Lalit duo, spoke affectionately about Alka’s contribution to their songs. “Most of the female songs of Jatin-Lalit have been sung by Alka Yagnik. She was our preferred singer and she added a lot to the songs with her voice.”

Speaking on Alka’s place among playback singers Lalit observes, “Alka had a clear edge amongst her contemporaries as her voice quality was far better than the others. Also, she was a hard and sincere working lady and would always rehearse the song before coming to the studios.”
Lalit feels Alka, who turned a year older on March 20, deserves to be duly honoured. “She has achieved great success with years and years of effort, singing multiple songs in a day. In fact, she holds the record for being the most streamed voice ever. During Alka’s earlier years her mother was dedicated to encouraging and taking her to music directors and pushing her to make a breakthrough in the music industry.”

Lalit designates Alka his favourite female playback singer after the Mangeshkar sisters. He says, “She was liked by all composers of the 90s and ended up singing in most of the 1980s and 90s and the years ahead. She has sung most duets with the male singers of that era. Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet and Sonu Nigam have all their best duets with Alka.”

Lalit wishes Alka be conferred with the Padma Shri. “She is certainly the best after the Mangeshkar sisters. I feel she is one of the last artistes to have done such massive work. It seems unfair that despite her tremendous achievement, she has not yet been conferred with a Padma Shri, whereas her lesser competitors are already Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardees. Hopefully this will be done soon and she will be given the respect she deserves.”
