The Seattle Kraken have extended head coach Dave Hakstol through the 2025-26 season, general manager Ron Francis announced Wednesday.
After the Kraken suffered mightily in their inaugural season, Hakstol lead the team to a 100-point season their sophomore year, where they not only secured the franchise’s first playoff berth, but also defeated the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche in the first round.
For this improvement, Hakstol was named as a finalist for the Jack Adams Award for head coach of the year, which was won by Boston Bruins bench boss Jim Montgomery.
“We believe we are heading in the right direction with Dave as our head coach and it was important to show that confidence with this contract extension,” said Francis said. “Dave and his staff have done a great job of creating a close-knit, team-first mindset in our locker room and their work ethic helps set the tone for our team.”

In total with the Kraken, the 54-year-old Red Deer, Alta., native has a record of 73-77-14, including a record last season of 46-28-8.
Prior to joining the Kraken ahead of their inaugural season, Hakstol was an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers between 2015 and 2019, earning a record of 134-101-42 before he was fired during the 2018-19 season.
