Curtains will be drawn on Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru tomorrow. The 10 days Games saw some amazing performances and several meet-level records being broken by the budding athletes from various Universities.

AIR correspondent reports that during the Inaugural of Khelo India University Games the Prime Minister has called upon sportspersons to play the Games for their country instead of their family or University. In the true spirit of sportsmanship, the adversaries in the Games gave their best. Some of the performances were of international standards. Such talents are recognized and a few will be groomed for international events.  Siva Sridhar was a star performer winning seven Gold and Two Silver in the pool. His medal haul is more than that of the previous edition’s most successful athletes. Another swimmer from Jain University, Srihari Nataraj won Gold in the 50-meter freestyle in a time of 23.23 seconds. Ann Mariya setting a new National Record in the 87 kg women’s weightlifting competition was the highlight of Khelo India University Games. The Gold-winning weightlifter from Mangalore University lifted 129 kg to break Manpreet Kaur’s clean and jerk record of 128 kgs at the National Championships earlier this year.

In the 98 kg senior Weightlifting event Vaishnav Thakur from Savithri bai Phule University, Pune lifted 313 kgs to win the Gold medal. The presence of Olympian M M Somaya, Anil Aldrin, Sandeep Somesh, and Ravi Nayakar at the boxing venue was encouraging. Tokyo Olympians Srihari Nataraj representing Swimming, Manu Bhaker in Shooting, and Dutee Chand in Athletics competed in the Games.   For the second edition of Khelo India University Games over 4000 sportspersons from over 200 universities took part in 20 disciplines. Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru is a Green Game. Everything used in the field of play is made of reusable material. Electric vehicles are used for transportation. Waste is segregated as wet and dry at the source in every venue.
