Khambir, Kahwa And More: A Look At Gary Mehigan’s Ladakh Adventures

Gary Mehigan seems to enjoy trying regional Indian food. His latest trip to Leh-Ladakh is yet more proof of this. The celebrated Australian chef and cookbook author arrived in India two weeks ago, and his first stop was in the Himalayas: amid the snowy peaks of Leh-Ladakh. One of the first things he tasted was a drink made of seabuckthorn. He explained that it is “a yellow sour fruit picked in summer here from the thorny bushes that grow everywhere there is water.” But that’s not the only local beverage he relished. He also had a glass of Kahwa tea infused with saffron, cinnamon, cloves and almonds.

Among the food items, he savoured traditional khambhir (a flatbread-like delicacy) that had a chana (chickpea) stuffing. He also took “a short walk around the market and Leh Old Town”, which he called “a nice, gentle way to acclimatise to the altitude.” He shared a picture of a vendor selling fresh green veggies. But what especially caught our eye was another image, featuring a range of fry fruits: walnuts, cashew nuts, almonds, raisins and others. Take a look at the carousel post below:

After Ladakh, Gary Mehigan has gone to Mumbai. He found time to visit a cafe in Bandra and indulge in a yummy-looking burger, salad, fries, coffee and more.

Before this, Gary had visited India in May 2023. We enjoyed following his foodie outings in Madurai. He shared drool-worthy pictures and videos on Instagram. Rava dosa, Mullu Murungai Vadai, Kesari Boli, Kola Urundai, and Nalli chops were just some of the treats he feasted on. He also became a fan of crisp parottas! Read the full story here.
