Bangladesh got the upper-hand with four wickets on the second morning of the Durban Test against South Africa after the day started with the scoreboard reading 233 for 4, leaving them on a slightly rickety 314 for 8.
The Bangladesh bowlers hit good lengths and tight lines consistently, with Khaled Ahmed, playing only his fourth Test, leading the pack. Khaled trapped Kyle Verreynne lbw in the seventh over of the morning, getting the ball to move back in a long way from a good length. Replays supported the umpire’s decision after Verreynne asked for a review. Next ball, Wiaan Mulder edged to gully where Mahmudul Hasan Joy took a sharp catch to his left.
Temba Bavuma, overnight on 53, assumed control of the South Africa innings thereafter, adding 53 runs for the seventh wicket with Keshav Maharaj. But after they had settled in and looked good to go on, Mehidy Hasan Miraz got one to rip back into Bavuma, who was giving himself room to play on the off side. But the ball snaked through, hit his legs and went on to hit the stumps. Bavuma had scored 93 in 190 balls.
South Africa again lost two wickets off consecutive balls when Ebadot Hossain clean bowled Maharaj for 19 in the next over. Bangladesh nearly had another when Lizaad Williams was given out lbw against Ebadot but he was saved by the DRS as the ball had pitched outside leg stump.
The home side batted well on the first day after Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee added 113 for the opening stand. They fell away with three wickets in the second season, before Bavuma and Verreynne added 53 in the third session to lead a bit of a recovery. Mehidy was the best bowler on the first day, bowling tightly for 26 overs and effecting a brilliant run-out in the second session.
