‘Ketchup goes in the fridge!’: Kraft Heinz sparks Twitter debate

Social media users found themselves firmly divided on last week after Kraft Heinz insisted that ketchup was meant to reside within the fridge. The assertion by the company’s UK Twitter handle – followed by a poll with one one ‘right’ answer – has since sparked off a furious debate, with netizens bonding over their distaste for cold condiments.

“FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!” read an exasperated post of the Heinz UK handle.

“Where do you keep yours? It has to be… in the fridge!” it insisted in a follow up post, initiating a poll.

And while thousands agreed (63.2% of the 13,178 voters) the rest were having none of it.

“Why is it not in the fridge at the supermarkets then?” retorted one user.

“Heinz don’t even know where their product should be stored,” lamented another.

“No it doesn’t. You stick to production and I’ll deal with the consumption,” advised a third.

This incidentally is not the first time that such a question has been posed to consumers. In 2017 for example, the US wing of Heinz had fielded a similar question from a social media user.

“Because of its natural acidity, Heinz Ketchup is shelf-stable, but refrigerate after opening to maintain product quality,” the company had advised at the time.

“We started something… it has been a wild ride,” Heinz UK eventually tweeted as the debate raged on.
