The stylists turned to the independent American brand Sportmax for the memorable army green three-piece suit. The bra top underneath added a healthy dose of femininity to the otherwise oversized and androgynous silhouette. “We were really looking for timeless looks that could stand the test of time,” share Bannerman and McDonald (who are known professionally as Wayman + Micah). The two say they wanted something where “Keke could look back on her first SNL hosting gig years from now and the look would still feel relevant.”
Some viewers drew comparisons between Palmer’s suit-jacket reveal and a similar move executed by Beyoncé at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. As Palmer is an outspoken fan of the singer, was this a conscious reference? “That really was just a coincidence!” Wayman + Micah answer. “We just wanted to make it a moment. With SNL being a huge career milestone and her pregnancy being a life milestone, it was important for it to feel theatrical. She even ended up improvising from what had been rehearsed, so we knew she felt her most confident self during the reveal.”
The stylists first worked with Palmer back in 2014, when she hosted a woefully short-lived BET talk show. The trio temporarily parted ways in 2016—pursuing new ventures—but they found their way back to each other in the fall of last year.
Wayman + Micah, who never worked with a pregnant celebrity client before, have quickly learned how to highlight and celebrate Palmer’s changing silhouette on the red carpet during this exciting time. “Michael Kors has been a great brand for Keke during this moment in her life,” the two say. “His looks have helped to emphasize her pregnancy glow and have really highlighted her new silhouette!”
