Kathmandu Mayor counters ‘Akhand Bharat’ mural in Delhi with ‘Greater Nepal’ map
India and Nepal appear to be engaged in a cartographical conflict with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City mayor now installing a depiction of ‘Greater Nepal’ in his chamber. The development comes as a symbolic counter to the purported ‘Akhand Bharat’ mural in India’s new parliamentary building.
According to local media reports, Balendra Shah had called aides on Thursday and asked them to place a map of Greater Nepal in his chamber. It was intended to be a response to the New Delhi mural, with an aide telling Kathmandu Post of the need to ‘remember the proud history of Nepal’.
The development also came less than a day after Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said that he had raised the issue during his recent visit to New Delhi and received a clarification. Addressing the parliament he however called for ‘further study’ on the issue.
“While talking about the map during my India visit, the Indian side said it was a cultural map, not a political one. Further study should be carried out on the issue,” he said while responding to the questions raised by the lawmakers.
